So, anyone doing anything wildly interesting this Summer?

I assume Ginnie and Ian will be getting a head-start on their schools'
bureaucracy requirements tee hee whilst Stuart will probably be flown
out to the Maldives for his single annual department meeting
(runs)...Il Professore, or JohnHP the Professor to his friends -
sailing? Anybody climbing a mountain or going backpacking or something
equally work-avoiding? Or are all you graduates (ewwww) seeking
work/have sought work straight away?

Got it in one. Had a few weeks off, then starting working in college
doing random computery stuff. Then I'll have to find an actual job, for
long term...

Departmental meetings? What are Departmental meetings?

I've had a week in Cannes(my mother's 80th birthday present) which was
good, but the planned week in Marbella has fallen through. I've got
stacks of Euros as a result, and was seriously planning to go to
Stockholm with them, before realising that this would be exceptionly
dumb. Now I've got to squeeze somewhere in before A level results and
then GCSEs and, very shortly after that, back to skool. Any ideas?

Oooh well I believe the best time to go to Italy is the Autumn but I
think it's the Summer when they have all of their festivals, which
might be fun...Just don't go anywhere near Greece...

Italy does have shed loads of festivals in summer - nearly all of them well
worth a visit! Not sure what Autumn is like in Italy but summer sure is a
great time to visit (if not a little warm at times!)

Bureaucracy does indeed loom, but I'm having my house pulled apart and
rebuilt (with new kitchen/family room and new room upstairs) so I type to
the sound of hammering and have kept thoughts of school at bay. I won't be
travelling this summer, but I may get to hold a NIWW (New Improved West
Wing) party before the autumn panic kicks in.

John is hoping to do some sailing, I think.

<cackle> Oh I strongly approve of the West Wing (original cast) though I
haven't got to see it much recently - on too late on Channel 4 - why do they
always bury their best programmes on the graveyard shift? My (house's) West
Wing began as a family joke when the Os were tots and all the WW consisted
of was a utility room type thing in a leanto at the back of the house. When
the current building gets finished (soonpleaseplease), we'll actually have a
West Wing, well a gable facing west for the first time ever. Hence the plan
for a gathering.

John is always hoping to do some sailing. Where has the old bugger
been anyway?

Me, I'm teaching, oh, at least 10 new courses next year (no, really I
am) including IT which should be, urm, fun. So that just abou takes
care of my summer holidays anyway. Now, if I could get the bloody
chance to get near a mountain I'd be up it quicker than a rat up a
drain pipe (well, at my age maybe a little slower actually).....

Hmm, nothing in stone yet but the plan is to spend time walking the
cleveland way, either that or do Hadrians wall - haven't decided what yet.
Was supposed to be backpacking around Eastern Europe with my mate but plans
(ok finance and the evils of work) stopped me - didn't stop my mate tho -
he's somewhere in eastern europe now!

Only problem is that woek won't let me have 2 week off in one go (i've used
my holidays allready!) so i'm going to have to go out and do a few days at a
time!

Ah well!

Keeps me out of the way!

Ewww, walking...I avoid that at all costs...Though, strangely, running
I find to be acceptable. Eastern Europe is becoming quite popular for
things like that, and its pretty cheap too...I suppose you have to

My plans:
1. Find the right person.
2. Go to Tahiti for 10 days.

Oh yes.

The difficult part is finding the right person. (Actually, I know who
that person is, but she returned to Germany a month-and-a-half ago and,
simultaneously, returned to her "ex" boyfriend. Women, eh? As fickle
as the weather.)

Well I could of course bring my laptop to have access to the
statistical software that I need as well as to LaTeX and electronic
papers/articles...

But the distraction would probably be too high; even in my office at
university it's difficult to work at the current temperatures.

Anyway, I'm sure that I'll have a calm summer soon. Maybe next year.
Or after the PhD. Or after having become lecturer. Or senior lecturer.
Or maybe upon retirement? OK, let's not think about this too much.

Good question.

The academic job market in economics is extremely efficient, meaning
that there is very strict sorting on quality, with new PhDs having to
apply to many many departments to be able to receive a couple of job
offers.

Just as examples, the average PhD job market candidate in economics in
the US applies to 75 (!) departments, and the economics department
here at Essex has recently hired four new lecturers out of 300 (!)
applications, with all of them having their PhDs from top European and
US departments.

In that sense, choice with respect to location is certainly somewhat
limited in academic economics.

I enjoy the atmosphere here at my research institute very much, both
academically and socially, being far superior to what I know from
Austria. Still, it seems like this research institute is a special
place, with the atmosphere at many of the other departments being much
worse. In that sense I cannot say whether I enjoy it here because it's
in the UK or just because I had luck with my particular research
institute.

That said, I'm flexible with respect to location, so when it comes to
being on the job market in 2006 or 2007 (fingers crossed) I will just
do my best and hope that I'll find a department or research institute
whose atmosphere can compete with the one I'll be used to from here.

Getting the union ready for the students to return...it's a hard job but
someone's got to do it!

What, you mean testing all the beers to see if the pipes need
cleaning? Oooh, I pity you so!

What's the point? My experience tells me that after one big event after the
holidays, the union will smell like stale beer and a hint of vomit anyway,
and none of the pool tables will work properly anymore. Bloody students.
