so just because there is a little 'pressure' we should all feel sorry for
these kids and ignore the fact that an A is meaning less and less.

don't these people realise that their results do not show how clever they
are. i mean, if they were to change the system back to the old method and
make them competitive, the kids wouldn't suddenly become dumber just because
fewer got As.

okay, so i'm probably in a unique position of actually enjoying exams. i
like going in and pouring out my knowledge onto the paper (or sitting
staring at a blank sheet of paper wishing i had revised). it doesn't make
me nervous, i know that i will do as well as i will do, and i don't see what
all the fuss is about.

maybe everyone should be like me ;-)

if someone came up to me and said "all the work you have done for the past
three years is worthless, look, it was much MUCH harder 20 years ago" i
would say "shit, yeah, you are right, damn, must work harder, you guys were
taught so much more," i wouldn't cry about it.

grrrrrrrrrrr

Unfortunately, it's not just some bastard in the street or their
scholastic nemesis telling them this, it's (some) teachers, university
admissions, the media, everybody, near enough...It would be quite
depressing...

Well if everyone is saying it then maybe they should wake up and realise
that there might be some truth to it.

Rather than just living in thier own little fantasy world where they are
brilliant and nobody can take that away from them.

Hmm, ok I'm now confused about what you're saying in each post.

:-P

I'm saying that given the current trend of a-level results, we are fast
moving to a situation where a C, or even a B, is considered a 'fail', at
least perhaps in the minds of those students going to top universities.

I'm saying that the students should stop thinking about only themselves for
2 seconds and realise that the current trend cannot be allowed to continue,
and that making a-levels harder (and thus redistributing the grades
downwards a bit) will not make them less clever, but it will make the job of
the rest of the world in judging them a lot easier.

If a-levels *were* made harder, and one of these straight A students got a B
instead, would they jump up and down and scream and make a fuss?

If they did, shirley they are just really stupid, cos it isn't *them* which
has become less clever, they didn't have some divine right which caused them
to deserve an A, they worked as hard and were just judged on a different
scale, which made it easier for universities to decide who gets a place and
who doesn't (or employers to decide who gets employed and who doesn't).

That is what I am trying to say.

Why do I suck? I explain myself when people don't understand me ... unlike
some people ...

ok cool, I agree; it would be much better for me to get As whilst
others only get Bs, thus illuminating my true excellence :P But I had
read in one post that you would, as one of those students, be defiant,
and then in the other you're saying the above...I guess I didn't get
your tone :P
