so, my boyf made me watch the football last night.

i couldn't believe that the spanish crowds were chanting at wright phillips
every time he came near the ball. also, for some reason, they didn't chant
at ashley cole nearly as much. so they weren't even consistent racists.

i may be nieve (sp?) but i thought such blatant, public racism like this
didn't really exist anymore. :o(

it's football ... the people who watch it and make a big screaming fuss when
guys run around kicking a round thing aren't exactly the most eduated and
open minded people in the world.

if you want more blatent public rasism, or gay bashing, or many other forms
of bigotry, check out america.

Read "A Season With Verona" by Tim Parks: it offers an interesting take
on racism in football.

Or Russia. Or India. Or Zimbabwe. But you were not perhaps intending to
indite the whole American nation? In any case, if you compare like with
like (big mainstream sporting events), you've surely picked the wrong
villain.

so? i mean i know that's true to an extent (although many people who love
football are extremely intelligent) but i felt shocked and appalled watching
it. it's hard to know what to do about it though. my suggestion would be to
ban spain from the world cup.

Er, fuck off. At least preface that with "some of..."

Fwiw, things are better now than a few years ago. Then it was just a
few of us kicking up a fuss and confronting people. Now, I read, whole
sections of crowds are pointing the finger and willing to stand up and
be counted to get rid of the racists. The clubs take it more seriously
and incidents like this help to reinforce feelings in this country
that racists need to be hounded out of the game.
